It’s the squinting and helmet hair, I’m sure, but I really do feel like I need a big ker-blammo added in the infield behind the Lancer here, haha.

I feel like this is the sort of gif and advertising the SCCA needs for track night in america. “Avergae person raced their average car around an average race track......and had a smile so big they couldn’t fit inside their car to drive home so they stayed and did more laps*”
* = They were not allowed to do more laps.

It needs to be an explosion of Mr. Regulumps.

What you NOW need to do is fix the 411 and then scare him MORE on a race track with that.

There must be at least one person in the internet wanting to explode a Lancer out of hatred for Mitsubishi not making a new Evo.

And the problem with the thing is that you need to get a helmet to participate. That helmet kind of keeps us proles out because it becomes difficult to justify when you add in even a cheap helmet to the entry fees.
This is legitimately why my car has never seen a track.

More fire, and less car after it dissipates

Once you do spring for a helmet and entry fees, you’ll know exactly what you paid for after about the 2nd corner, but by then it will be too late. Perceptions of automobiles shift and life priorities change . It caused a fourteen year old me to decide that if there are things in this world more fun that playing with racecars on racetracks, I don’t need them. Nineteen years later, this is just as true as it was that day in a mentors 240z SCCA ITS car on the then brand-new local track that a few scca folks were informally feeling out for the first time just to see what could be done there.
The things you’ll do to scratch the itch again, to go faster, to do better. If you’re not careful, you’ll stop looking for cars with titles and start shopping for cars with logbooks instead.

There’s usually rental helmets available...

This is good Jalopnik Oppo. Good rubber, pads that can take some heat and little toe out... sounds like a nicely set up FWD street car! Between your various articles over the years and Mr. Regular’s video, I’d like to think this is the most famous Lancer GTS around.

Track day is 100-150$. I can get an okay helmet for occasional use for under that cost. I fail to see why that is a barrier to someone who wants to do it. And others have pointed out that loaners and rentals are usually available.
Not trying to be rude, but if that is your only reason then it isn’t really a barrier for entry.
Here’s a random open face helmet for less than the price of a track night in america event (unless the event is on sale in which case the brand new helmet, good for a few years, is a few bucks more ) .
![]() 07/03/2018 at 02:06 |

Yep. Not having a helmet isn’t a reason. If someone is nervous or unsure then by all means, don’t feel pressured to go, but not having a helmet is a bit of a joke...

Can you get Berang to track the 95? I want to see that on camera.

At the time (a couple years ago), it was a big expense (I was spending everything between living expenses and a wedding). I recall that you couldn’t do it for under $250 where I was and there are reasons I’d prefer a full face helmet (which were costlier and there were definitely no loaners or rentals for our event up here), then I had experience with R/C racing and knew that if I got into it that I’d need to buy better equipment. I also would have needed to leave around noon from work just to get there in time... Ultimately, I decided it was just too much cost and commitment for a potential one-off experience.

What you need is to start with something like this, ‘shop in Stef’s head, and add “Kinja’d”.

Try riding a motorcycle on a race track.
Then try gridding up in an actual race on one.
![]() 07/03/2018 at 18:53 |

Without a doubt! The same distinction applies to rac ing cars, too . Track day bros may think they’ve been having fun, and maybe even think they’re “racing” when controlled passing is allowed, but forming up for the start for the first time and what feels like inching along down the front straight with twenty other junkies in the run group waiting for the starter to throw the green flag is an entirely different game.
However, I decided long ago that racecars were a more calculated risk. I’ve crash hard on a racetrack and walked away from it (the car, not so much, but the roll cage and all the other equipment did exactly what it was supposed to do ). I completely get the appeal to racing motorcycles, but I drew my line at open wheel formula cars.

Yep, track days are fun, and you get 2 or 3 times as much actual track time for the same cost as a race weekend. It sounds counter-intuitive, but I think racing gives a better value though, given how much more intense the entire weekend is.
Agreed that the start is the best part!

It’s a Lancer, not a Pinto. It’s designed to fall off a cliff and still mostly sorta live.

I’m sure if we got
Jerry Bruheimer
to redo that gif, he could make it so you would only have to look at the Lancer and it would blow up.

The Lancer is too good of a car. Jerry would implode instead.
